Whether you are a dark-skinned diva, bronze-skinned beauty, or fair-skinned female, everyone is at risk of developing skin cancer. Studies show that melanin may provide some protection against sunburn, but exposure to UV rays causes skin cancer, and melanin does not prevent the skin from absorbing ultraviolet rays. Therefore everyone, regardless of race, ethnicity, age, or gender, has to protect themselves against skin cancer. Last year, melanoma, which is the deadliest form of skin cancer, was the cause of 63,700 deaths. Take these steps so you do not become a statistic:
- Wear protective clothing
- Monitor UV radiation
- Find shady spots
- Stay hydrated
- Choose the right sunscreen
- Wear sunglasses
- Put on a hat
- Check your skin for moles or irregular spots
